Lithuanian and Polish Infrastructure Managers Strengthen Cooperation on Rail Baltica

LTG Group’s infrastructure company, LTG Infra, has renewed its service agreement with the Polish infrastructure manager PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. to provide assistance in the event of railway accidents on the European 1435 mm gauge. The agreement stipulates that, if necessary, Poland will deliver technical support to Lithuania—an important step toward enhancing mutual trust and infrastructure resilience.
“This agreement goes beyond technical support—it demonstrates a shared commitment to ensuring the reliability and safety of the existing 1435 mm European gauge. By working closely with our Polish counterparts, we strengthen not only operational readiness but also the trust between our countries. It is a practical measure to guarantee continuity and resilience of this strategically important rail link whenever needed most,” said Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of LTG Group.
Piotr Wyborski, CEO of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., emphasized that renewing the cooperation agreement reflects the shared responsibility for Rail Baltica.
“Together, we are building safer and more resilient European railway network. Our teams and specialized equipment are fully prepared to support operations in Lithuania whenever required. This partnership is a practical step toward ensuring reliable traffic flow and strengthening the overall security of a strategically important rail route in our region,“ said Wyborski.
The European gauge is currently used by LTG Cargo for freight transport, military mobility purposes, oversized and specialized cargo transport. LTG Cargo operates an intermodal train three times a week on the Kaunas–Łódź–Duisburg route. Transport to and from Western Europe is particularly efficient, as cargo does not need to be transferred from European gauge to standard gauge at the Lithuanian-Polish border, saving both time and costs.
Although no accidents have occurred on this gauge over the past five years, the agreement remains crucial for maintaining infrastructure safety.
“This demonstrates that maintaining existing infrastructure—often underfunded—is essential to ensuring safe and reliable traffic. Investment in maintenance is a cornerstone of resilience, both for everyday operations and in times of crisis,” says Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra.
Additionally, LTG Infra has signed a bilateral agreement with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. for the use of an infrastructure diagnostic vehicle that regularly monitors the condition of the 1435 mm gauge infrastructure.
LTG Infra and PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. continue to work closely to further develop European standard railway infrastructure, ensuring faster and more efficient cross-border connections in the future.
Rail Baltica is a strategic project for the European Union, representing the largest railway infrastructure initiative in the history of the Baltic States. Once completed, it will deliver an electrified European standard gauge railway line connecting Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with Poland and further to Central and Western Europe. This integration will strengthen regional connectivity, enhance civil and military mobility, and improve the overall resilience of the European transport system.
