LTG’s progress in sustainability recognised worldwide
The largest railway group in the Baltic States, LTG Group, has received high ratings from the world-renowned international sustainability rating agencies MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) and EcoVadis. As noted by LTG Group CEO Egidijus Lazauskas, the ratings confirm the company's leadership ambitions and targeted progress in the area of sustainability.
"The ratings we have received show once again that the LTG Group is already performing above the industry average and setting a new standard for sustainability in the region. We strive not only to meet established standards, but also to create new practices that could become the direction for the industry in the future. This is an area that we will continue to strengthen consistently so that we are not followers in sustainability management, but leaders who set the direction," says E. Lazauskas, CEO of the LTG Group.
The independent analytical company MSCI has given a positive assessment of the LTG Group's progress in the areas of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) – the group has been awarded a high AA rating (on a scale from AAA to CCC). According to the rating, the LTG Group is among the leaders in the road and rail sector. LTG received above-average ratings in the areas of health and safety, labor relations management, and corporate governance. The MSCI rating is an indicator of how effectively a company manages sustainability-related, financially material risks and opportunities compared to other companies in the same sector.
Another business sustainability rating agency, EcoVadis, awarded the LTG Group a bronze rating, meaning that the group's companies are among the top 35% of the most sustainable companies worldwide. This is a significant international recognition, demonstrating that the LTG Group's environmental, social responsibility, and governance practices meet high contemporary sustainability standards.
The EcoVadis assessment covered such important areas as environmental protection, employee rights, safety, diversity and well-being, business ethics, transparency, digital security, and procurement. The EcoVadis methodology helps companies not only to assess their progress, but also to clearly see areas for improvement – the insights provided during the LTG assessment will form the basis for even more ambitious changes in the coming years.
EcoVadis is one of the most widely used sustainability assessment systems in the world, currently evaluating more than 130,000 companies from 180 countries and 220 sectors.
Sustainability leadership is reinforced by railway electrification and digitalization
The LTG Group is purposefully implementing strategic projects that are shaping a new, greener, and more modern standard for the railway sector. In order to systematically reduce its impact on the climate, the company has prepared a comprehensive decarbonization plan for 2025. It sets out specific targets and measures to help consistently reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in all areas of the group's activities.
Decarbonization has become one of the six main directions of LTG's strategy for 2026–2030. These ambitious goals not only enable the LTG group to reduce its negative impact on the environment and climate, but also open up significant economic and technological opportunities. The energy consumption and maintenance costs of new-generation electric trains are about 40% lower, which contributes to more efficient use of resources. Innovations and renewable energy solutions are being implemented in parallel, from battery trains to a pilot project for synthetic HVO diesel.
The electrification of railway infrastructure is one of the projects that will bring about significant change. The main artery of the country, Vilnius–Klaipėda, is currently being electrified. Once the work is completed, the electrified railway in Lithuania will account for 28% of the country's total railway network. This is a fundamental step towards achieving the Green Course objectives, reducing emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and opening up opportunities for greener passenger and freight transport.
Alongside this major infrastructure transformation, the LTG Group is also consistently implementing other sustainability initiatives. These include the Safe Tracks project, dedicated to traffic safety and responsible behavior in the railway environment; the Barrier-Free Route initiative, which increases the accessibility of railways for passengers with special needs; the Green Kilometers calculator and certificates, which help businesses measure and reduce the environmental impact of their activities; as well as innovative solutions such as a solar power plant integrated into a noise barrier, which contributes to the development of renewable energy.
LTG's sustainability strategy is reinforced by the digitalization and efficiency solutions implemented across the group, ranging from automated diagnostics and smart systems to innovative energy and technology projects that pave the way for an even more sustainable and secure business model.
