The pianos that delighted passengers throughout December will remain at Vilnius and Kaunas railway stations

In the run-up to the festive season, the LTG Group invited people to experience the anticipation of Christmas in a different way, presenting a wide-ranging programme of events under the theme Christmas is Rolling Down the Tracks.

Festively decorated stations in Vilnius and Kaunas welcomed adults and children to a variety of activities and introduced an open stage featuring a piano, where anyone could sit down and play. The initiative culminated in a festive concert by renowned pianist Giedrius Nakas.

The pianos, installed at the beginning of December, proved to be a pleasant surprise for passengers and local residents alike. The initiative attracted considerable interest: more than 200 people chose to play the piano in Vilnius, while around 150 of all ages did so in Kaunas, entertaining station visitors with well-known pieces as well as their own original compositions.

According to Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra, the idea of placing pianos in railway stations stemmed from a desire to bring more life and warmth to these public spaces, while encouraging creativity and a sense of community.

“We are delighted to see so many confident and talented people in our stations. Music creates a special atmosphere — it is an emotion that connects people and creates a memorable experience. That is why we have decided to continue the initiative: the pianos are here to stay,” says Žalimas.

Among the hundreds who took part, one senior gentleman’s story stood out. Having played the piano in his youth but lacking the opportunity in recent years, he found the station piano a true rediscovery. He began visiting almost daily, reliving the joy of playing and sharing music with others. His melodies often caused passers-by to pause, momentarily forgetting their hurry as they immersed themselves in sound.

Passengers can continue to travel on festively decorated trains until 11 January. Meanwhile, more than 5,000 people visited Bėgių Parkas near Vilnius railway station during a weekend-long outdoor celebration. The programme featured creative workshops, educational activities, games with Santa Claus, concerts by well-known musicians, and impressive laser shows each festive evening. The Railway Museum also joined in the celebrations, turning its spaces in both Vilnius and Šiauliai into festive creative workshops.
