A Technological Leap in Railway Maintenance: Enhancing Safety and Reliability
“LTG Infra”, the railway infrastructure company of the LTG Group, is taking another step in digitalising railway maintenance by signing a contract for the acquisition of mobile infrastructure diagnostics equipment. This technological solution will strengthen data-driven network management, increase traffic safety, and improve operational efficiency.
The mobile 3D scanning system, based on LiDAR technology, will record railway infrastructure geometry in real time and enable the creation of a highly detailed digital model of the entire network. This tool will allow for extremely precise assessment of the current condition of infrastructure, continuous monitoring of changes, and data-driven decision-making regarding maintenance, repair, and development.
According to Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra, the new system marks a significant step toward strengthening the safety and reliability of railway infrastructure.

The implemented system will allow us to move toward a model where decisions are based on precise and continuously updated information rather than isolated inspections. This will enable us to detect even the smallest changes in a timely manner, promptly identify risks, and prevent potential disruptions,” says V. Žalimas.
Reducing the Risk of Errors
Until now, some important measurements have been carried out manually or based on visual inspections, making processes time-consuming and prone to human error. The new technology will automate these tasks, significantly increase the accuracy and speed of measurements, and reduce dependence on external service providers.
In the initial phase, the mobile scanner will be used to measure the geometry of the overhead contact network. It will enable precise determination of parameters such as the height of electrical wires above the tracks, deviations, distances, and other characteristics, ensuring that the network required for electric train operation meets all safety and technical standards. Later, the equipment will also be used for broader infrastructure assessment, including measuring clearance profiles and identifying potentially hazardous locations where structures such as bridges, tunnels, or other objects are too close to the railway track.
The scanner will also be used for environmental monitoring, including tracking vegetation growth and identifying trees or plants that may pose a threat to infrastructure, as well as for other important analyses such as assessing the condition of embankments and ballast layers. The collected data will be integrated into LTG Infra’s existing systems, enabling more efficient planning of maintenance and repair works and facilitating a shift toward predictive infrastructure management.
System to Be Implemented Within Six Months
The equipment supply contract has been signed with UAB “GeoNovus”. The total contract value amounts to EUR 1.31 million (including VAT), and the system is expected to be implemented within six months. Initial testing is planned to begin by the end of this year, with full integration into LTG Infra’s daily operations expected from next year.
This project will become an important part of the company’s “Data Driven Infra” programme, aimed at developing a modern, smart, and reliable railway infrastructure in Lithuania.
