LTG Cargo has updated its Green Kilometrage Calculator

LTG Group's rail freight company LTG Cargo has updated its Green Kilometrage Calculator – a tool that businesses can use to calculate how much carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e) are saved by transporting their semi-trailer or container by rail on one of LTG Cargo's regular intermodal routes.

The Green Kilometrage Calculator is a sustainability initiative that encourages businesses to choose greener logistics. LTG Cargo developed this tool in response to the need of customers and partners to calculate how much carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions can be saved by transporting cargo by rail.

"We have updated the calculator for several reasons: the current savings calculation methodology is closer to European calculators. Secondly, it is now very easy to use. With just a few clicks, you can find out how much CO2e your business saves by choosing to transport a semi-trailer or container by rail rather than by road," says Eglė Šimė, head of LTG Cargo.

To find out how much CO2e emissions you can save, simply select one of LTG Cargo's regular intermodal routes in the calculator and indicate how many containers and/or semi-trailers you plan to transport. For example, if you choose the longest intermodal route from Kaunas to Duisburg (Germany) to transport 5 containers, you will save 3.7 t of CO2e emissions.

According to the  CEO of LTG Cargo, business interest in intermodal transport is driven not only by lower greenhouse gas emissions, but also by other benefits that benefit society as a whole: transferring freight to rail means less noise and greater safety on the roads. One intermodal train carries 36 containers or semi-trailers, which means that fewer trucks are on the roads, reducing wear and tear, solving the shortage of drivers, and making roads safer due to the lower probability of incidents.

Intermodal transport also offers a stable schedule and avoids road tolls, which is particularly relevant for long-distance, international transport.

Currently, LTG Cargo regularly provides intermodal transport services on the routes Klaipėda–Kaunas Intermodal Terminal (KIT)–Vilnius Intermodal Terminal (VIT) and Kaunas Intermodal Terminal (KIT)–Łódź (Poland)–Duisburg.

LTG Cargo awards Green Kilometrage Certificates to customers who have saved CO2e emissions. Between 2022 and 2024, businesses saved 163,873 tons of CO2e by transporting intermodal cargo with LTG Cargo, compared to emissions from road transport. More than 400 LTG Cargo customers received certificates attesting to the savings, and intermodal transport attracted around 40 new customers in 2025.

The freight transport company LTG Cargo is a part of the LTG Group, which is actively pursuing integration and expansion in the West. The company provides freight transport, intermodal transport, logistics and forwarding, freight loading, locomotive and wagon repair, and wagon rental services in Lithuania and abroad. LTG Cargo has established and manages the companies LTG Cargo Polska in Poland and LTG Cargo Ukraine in Ukraine. In developing greener freight transport by rail, the company brings together a team of 1,700 logistics professionals.
