Railway electrification

Trains are one of the most environmentally friendly means of transport. Passenger transport by train is several times less CO2 intensive than road transport, and the difference is even greater when compared to air travel. To enable passengers to travel and transport freight without leaving a footprint on the environment, we are electrifying railway lines and replacing fossil fuel trains with electric ones.

LTG Group is carrying out a major electrification project, resulting in the electrification of the most popular and heavily used railway corridor Vilnius-Klaipėda. Electrification of the line will significantly increase the competitiveness of railways and reduce air pollution by 150,000 tonnes per year.

There are several significant benefits of electrifying the railway:

  • Environmental benefits: Lithuania’s transport sector accounts for the largest share of air emissions. The project will reduce air pollution by 150,000 tonnes per year. The socio-economic benefits of the electrification project are estimated at more than EUR 700 million over the lifetime of the project, due to the reduced emissions.
  • Economic benefits: It is estimated that the reduced energy and rolling stock maintenance costs will potentially save carriers operating on the Lithuanian rail network around EUR 505 million and the project will payback in 19 years. Electrification of railways will have a major impact on the competitiveness of the Lithuanian transport sector.
  • We will attract new passengers: new comfortable electric trains will run between Vilnius and Klaipėda – the comfort will help attract more travellers. The signing of the PSO contract and the acquisition of new electric trains will increase the annual number of train passengers to 6 million in 2025 and 10 million in 2030.
