New Stadler trains to begin passenger service on 22 October

LTG Group’s passenger transport company, “LTG Link,” will begin operating the new “Stadler Flirt” trains on October 22. The new trains will initially run on the Vilnius–Kaunas–Vilnius and Vilnius–Trakai–Vilnius routes, and will later be gradually introduced on other planned routes.

“After many years, the passenger train fleet is finally undergoing a major renewal. This is one of the most significant changes in the history of the railways since independence, and passengers will be the first to feel the benefits. The new trains mean a completely new level of travel quality—far greater comfort, convenience, and modernity. We want people to board the train knowing that a comfortable and pleasant journey awaits them,” says Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas.

The launch of the new trains marks an important milestone in the implementation of the most significant project to modernize the “LTG Link” train fleet. In total, the company has acquired 15 new trains from the Swiss train manufacturer Stadler, 9 of which are electric and 6 are battery-powered, capable of operating on non-electrified railway sections.

“This project brings us closer to our strategic goal of becoming the backbone of Lithuania’s transportation system. A modern fleet allows us to offer passengers higher-quality and more comfortable journeys, which is essential for strengthening the role of rail in the country’s mobility system,” says Arūnas Rumskas, interim head of the LTG Group.

Starting October 22, the new electric trains will begin operating on the Vilnius–Kaunas–Vilnius route. The travel time for the first few trips on this route will be longer than usual due to major repairs being carried out on the overhead contact system at that time, aimed at ensuring smoother travel on one of the country’s busiest railway sections. The electric trains will also temporarily operate on the Vilnius–Trakai–Vilnius route.

“The launch of the new trains also marks a new phase in the quality of rail travel. We want passengers to feel this change the moment they step onto the train—traveling in greater comfort and in an environment tailored to the diverse needs of our passengers. The new trains are transforming not only our fleet but also the very experience of traveling in Lithuania,” says Kristina Meidė, CEO of “LTG Link.”

As new trains are gradually introduced onto the routes, electric trains will begin operating on the Vilnius–Klaipėda–Vilnius route in the second half of the fall. It is planned that by the end of the year, the majority of trains operating on this route will consist of the new Stadler rolling stock.

Operation of the battery-powered rolling stock is scheduled to begin in December. The new trains will begin service on the Kaunas–Šiauliai–Kaunas and Radviliškis–Klaipėda–Radviliškis routes, and in the second half of December, on the Vilnius–Varėna–(Marcinkonys)–Vilnius route as well.

Important news also awaits passengers on the Vilnius–Turmantas–Vilnius route. With the introduction of Stadler electric trains on the Vilnius–Klaipėda–Vilnius route, the DR1A-type trains operating toward Turmantas will be gradually replaced by newer and more modern PESA 630 and PESA 730-type trains.

Tickets for trips on the new “Stadler Flirt” trains are now available for purchase on the website www.ltglink.lt or via the mobile app. Trips operated by the new trains will be marked with a special symbol.
