LTG Infra enters a new stage of digitalisation: Station management to be transformed by a Europe-wide YMS system
LTG Infra is implementing a Yard Management System (YMS) across the national railway infrastructure, one of the most significant modernisation projects in recent years. This new station management platform will replace the STOKIS computerised information system, which has been in use for over twenty years. The YMS will form the core digital backbone for organising traffic planning, station operations and data accounting processes in line with EU requirements. The new system, which includes ten years of maintenance and support, will cost nearly €2.6 million.
Until now, station operations in Lithuania have been fragmented, with much of the work performed manually and information flows scattered. This complicated work planning, increased the risk of human error, and posed cybersecurity challenges. The legacy STOKIS tool could neither be adapted to national security requirements nor ensure modern data exchange. Some data, such as station or freight codes, still date back to the Soviet-era 1520 mm standard.
Implementation of the system will begin with a pilot project lasting several weeks, during which operations at six stations will be tested. After this, the system will be rolled out across the entire Lithuanian railway network, which comprises 106 stations in total.
What does this mean for carriers?
The new system will enable carriers to plan their resources more accurately and create conditions for faster wagon turnover and reduced reaction times, as it automatically proposes solutions for shunting, train formation and other operations.
“YMS fundamentally changes the culture of station operations. We are introducing transparent, clear processes based on European standards, which give all carriers equal access to information and allow them to operate far more efficiently,' says Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra. The new system will increase wagon turnover, reduce response times in unexpected situations, strengthen cybersecurity and enable more efficient capacity planning.
YMS introduces a new operating logic: Transforming the Entire Operational Logic of the Field from Manual Operations to Full Automation
The new YMS system transforms the entire operational logic of the field. It allows station activities to be organised according to a new model based on technological and process best practices, with clearly defined principles for planning, operational execution, data collection and accounting. Tasks that previously required manual work by operators will now be automated, including arrival and departure logs and the registration of shunting locomotive movements. This accelerates processes and significantly improves data accuracy.
One of the most notable changes is the integration of the YMS with both the traffic management system and the SAP enterprise resource planning system. Data on station operations will be sent to accounting systems in real time, resulting in fully automated invoicing. Furthermore, carriers will receive messages in a standardised European data format to help harmonise data exchange and digital interfaces across the entire logistics network.
The implementation of YMS ensures that all carriers, including large operators with their own IT systems and occasional users of station services, have equal opportunities to work with LTG Infra. Integrations will enable carriers to receive real-time information, and those without the necessary technology will be offered the InfraGO portal. This portal provides a simple, standardised way to submit orders and reserve capacity.
Experienced international technology partner selected
The tender for the YMS implementation was won by Petrosoft.pl Technologie Informatyczne, a Polish company with extensive experience in developing and implementing systems for railway management, warehousing, and laboratories. Vytis Žalimas emphasises that the procurement process was carried out transparently and professionally, with a competent team ensuring confidentiality to guarantee the most efficient use of business resources.
