In response to the fuel price crisis, a 50 percent discount was applied to train tickets in Lithuania for two months—April and May. According to data from “LTG Link”, the passenger transport company of the LTG Group, 1,077,180 passengers took advantage of the discount during this period.

“It is clear that the measure initiated by the Ministry of Transport and Communications proved effective—over the course of two months, more than a million passengers chose to travel by train. We are currently analyzing the data and hope to revisit the possibility of reinstating the discount at the end of the summer, after assessing the situation and the progress of infrastructure modernization work. We’ll be able to offer even more convenient travel options as early as this fall, when the new electric trains begin operating,” says Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas.

Trains are one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation, but until now, train travel has accounted for just 1.5 percent of the total market share for long-distance travel in Lithuania. The temporary discount not only helped offset residents’ transportation costs but also gave them the opportunity to try out trains as a more economical and sustainable alternative.

Compared to the same period last year, passenger traffic increased by 23 percent in April and May. During this period alone, as many as 34,593 residents traveled by train for the first time.

“The increase in passenger traffic shows that more attractive prices have encouraged people to choose trains and has once again confirmed the relevance of this mode of transportation. For some passengers, this has become an incentive to travel this way more often, and such changes are important in shaping long-term travel habits,” says Kristina Meidė, CEO of “LTG Link”.

According to “LTG Link” data, the 50% discount was actively used by various passenger groups—more than 149,000 students, over 126,000 children and schoolchildren, and more than 61,000 seniors.

The most popular routes remained Vilnius–Kaunas–Vilnius, Vilnius–Klaipėda–Vilnius, and Vilnius–Turmantas–Vilnius, while passenger numbers grew the fastest on the Vilnius–Mockava–Vilnius, Vilnius–Joniškis–Vilnius, and Kaunas–Šiauliai–Kaunas routes. This indicates that the discount encouraged more active travel not only between major cities but also within the regions.

Last year, nearly 6 million passengers traveled on “LTG Link” trains.
